This is not close or cheap, but it's quite an
adventure. This is the largest airshow in the world!
What makes it great for kids is their KidVenture area with tons
and tons of stuff for kids. They have pedal powered airplane
cars, hands on remote controlled airplane lessons, build your own
gliders, interactive booths, and more. The main AirVenture
area includes tours of many different airplanes.
If you go, bring a
wagon or oversized stroller (the off-road type). Fill it
with plenty of drinks, snacks, sun block, and some airplane
related toys/trinkets from the dollar store. They have food
on-site and a gift shop, but expect to pay a premium. Expect
to do some major walking-- much of it through fields. Don't
expect to see any air conditioning along the way-- so if it's
really hot, be prepared! Some of the airshow airplanes are
loud-- really, really loud! So bring ear protection for
anyone with sensory issues. Oh, and one last challenge...
the highway system is not designed to handle the type of traffic
that will be there with you, so expect a small traffic jam on your
way in and out. Gee, I sure hope this paragraph hasn't
talked you out of going, because it really is a fun event despite
the challenges for families.

Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park present a PEAK (Promoting
Environmental Awareness in Kids)
Friends of New Glarus Woods are sponsoring a naturalist program for
children at the picnic shelter and playground in the New Glarus Woods
State Park on Saturday July 26th at 7:00 p.m.
PEAK (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) is a partnership
program between Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and REI
(Recreation Equipment Inc.) to educate children about the outdoors and
responsible enjoyment of our public lands. The PEAK program is based on
the seven principles of Leave No Trace and aims to teach minimum impact
outdoor skills and ethics to children ages six to twelve. Friends of New
Glarus Woods State Park member and employee of REI, Daedre Decker, will
provide an entertaining program that teaches the seven principals of
Leave No Trace:
"I like to teach the Leave No Trace
Crime Scene game to kids," says Ms. Decker. "It is a fun way to engage
the children and it allows them to see how they can be thoughtful
stewards to the land." Friends of New Glarus Woods have created an
outdoor playground space based on the philosophy that children cannot
save the earth until they fall in love with it. Come visit the woods and
play on the rolling hill berm, bring your sand toys to the sandbox,
climb the wooden Ranger Station playground and run through the Discovery
Path.
The program is free. Vehicles that park in the New Glarus Woods State
Park must have a 2008 park sticker.

gardens with your butterfly passport and earn a free cone
from Michael's Frozen Custard!
First, the butterfly exploration begins in
the Lobby of Olbrich Botanical Gardens where people can investigate the
mysterious exotic butterflies in Dan Capps' collection on display and
back by popular demand. Capps has traveled around the world to build the
most impressive traveling display of exotic insects in North America.
Next, discover rare tropical treasures hidden in the heart of Madison!
Experience the wonder of strolling through a tropical rain forest on a
search for fleeting butterflies. Live butterflies are emerging from
chrysalises daily in the Bolz Conservatory. The Bolz Conservatory, which
will house the live butterflies, is a two-story glass pyramid filled
with exotic plants from around the world, a rushing waterfall, fragrant
orchids, and free-flying birds, and for one month out of the year,
thousands of colorful butterflies. The dainty painted lady, the
exquisite swallowtail, the tropical zebra butterflies, and many others
will all float through the lush greenery feeding on the nectar of bright
flowers. Up to two dozen species of butterflies, native to both
Wisconsin and tropical areas of the southern United States, can be seen
at various times during the exhibit.
Families can collect stamps in their passport without leaving the
gardens - their Butterfly Passport, that is. This fun tour will take
families on a search through the outdoor gardens to find butterflies in
their natural habitat, and earn a free frozen cone from Michael's Frozen
Custard. Visitors can look for Wisconsin's native butterflies and take
home ideas about how to attract butterflies to their own backyard
gardens. Along the way, children can visit stamping stations to collect
stamps in their Butterfly Passport while learning fun facts. The
passport is the ticket to an exciting adventure during which kids will
make fascinating butterfly discoveries.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for
children ages 3-12, and free to ages 2 and under. Members of the Olbrich
Botanical Society are admitted free of charge.
Two hatcheries will be featured in the Conservatory for many
opportunities to see butterflies emerging into life.

Ever Wonder What Your Baby is Thinking? Or Why Your Baby is
Crying? Using the BABY SIGNS® Program gives babies a way to
“talk” with their parents before they can talk. Babies can
communicate about the world around them long before they have
mastered their verbal speaking skills! Babies and their
parents can use simple signs to communicate important things –
like being hungry or thirsty, hot or cold, afraid or sad – often
a full year before babies could otherwise speak.
